Who should take this training

Medical professionals including nurses, paramedics and EMT seeking qualification to teach BLS Heartcode, BLS Provider and CFR Community.

Course Content

The Cardiac First Response (CFR) Community Course is the mandatory training standard for any group aiming to partner with the National Ambulance Service as a Cardiac First Responder Group. This course is an Irish Heart Foundation Course with a PHECC (Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council) CFR Community Module Add On. Candidates will be covered to instruct both IHF Heartsaver AED and PHECC CFR.

IHF/AHA BLS instructors can also teach Heartsaver Courses CPR & AED. The additional CFR portion of the course includes:

  • Stroke assessment (FAST Assessment)
  • Heart attack and the administration of aspirin
  • Patient Handover and CFR report

  • Infection Control

  • Post event issues (critical incident stress awareness and debrief)
  • Team resuscitation

Pre-Course Considerations

Candidates must hold current;

  • AHA BLS Provider Certification
  • PHECC CFR Community Certification

Instructor Competencies.

  • Proficiency in all BLS and CFR Community skills
  • Excellent ethics and professionalism
  • Ability to test candidates appropriately and effectively.
  • Compliance with time /space/materials and paperwork management according to own training site guidelines.

Maintaining Instructor Certification

Certification

  • Valid for 2 years from date of initial instructor course.

Recertification

  • Eligibility requirements: Teach minimum of 4 IHF/AHA Provider courses with CFR add on.
  • Conduct training for current instructor card expiry date.
  • Candidates successfully demonstrate all BLS CFR community provider skills and complete relevant updates.
  • Monitored by IHF BLS faculty members while teaching any of the IHF, AHA Provider courses.
  • To recertify through IHF CPR programme – must retain BLS instructor certificate.

Important: If this certification has lapsed instructors will not be able to renew with IHF but may be about to recertify as a CFR instructor.

Post Course Certification Requirements

Successful instructors who are signed off by an IHF BLS Faculty member will receive an IHF/AHA BLS Instructor Card and a PHECC CFR Community Instructor card, both of which are valid for two years.

Following the 2-day Instructor course, candidates must attend 3 Provider courses within 90 days (3 months) of the initial instructor course date:

  • Course 1 – Observe an IHF/AHA CPR course being taught by an experienced, currently certified IHF CPR Instructor

  • Course 2 – Assist on an IHF/AHA CPR course being taught by an experienced, currently certified IHF CPR Instructor
  • Course 3 – Teach on an IHF/AHA CPR course while accompanied by an experienced, currently certified IHF/AHA CPR Instructor, and be monitored and signed off by an IHF BLS Faculty Member

Successful instructors who are signed off by an IHF BLS Faculty member will receive an IHF/AHA BLS Instructor Card and a PHECC CFR Community Instructor card, both of which are valid for two years.
